There have been a lot of different actors playing Spider-Man in recent years, and a new petition wants to bring them together. The newest Spider-Man solo project, Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently in production and a new petition wants to get the original big-screen Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, set up with a cameo in the new film.
The petition found on Change.org has over 85,000 signatures at the time of writing and it asks Marvel to bring Tobey Maguire into a scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home, specifically, as a pizza delivery guy, one of the jobs that Maguire's Peter Parker had during his run of Spider-Man movies in the early 2000s. What's more, one signer of the petition suggested to take things one step further, and cast Andrew Garfield as the one receiving the pizza.
Exactly where the actual actors from Spider-Man: Far From Home would fit into a scene where Tobey Maguire is delivering a pizza to Andrew Garfield is not clear.
To be sure, bringing in the two actors who previously played Spider-Man at the cinema would be a nice gesture. We've frequently seen actors who played superheroes in previous incarnations make cameos in modern movies, so this is hardly new territory.
I'm all for both cameos taking place, though I have to wonder if "pizza delivery guy" is the best way to handle it. The plotline of Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Peter Parker and his friends visiting Europe. I'm sure you can get a pizza delivered in Paris or Rome, but why would you? Is that really what you'd want for dinner when there are so many other restaurants worth checking out?
Also, Tobey Maguire is 43-years-old. I'm sure there are 40-year-old pizza delivery guys out there, but surely we can find something else for him to do. Maguire looks young, but not that young.
The petition also points out that bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield into the movie has the potential to introduce the concept of the Spider-Verse in the MCU. While we're getting a crash course in the Spider-Verse thanks to the upcoming animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, that movie is entirely done by the Sony side of things and I don't really see Marvel making the decision to play with that idea too much. The idea of alternate realities could certainly pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, but likely only in a broader sense, with less focus specifically on Spider-Man.
While petitions like this one rarely see tangible results, they do allow for Marvel to get an idea what the fans are looking for from them. Maybe something like this could happen down the line. It's not the craziest idea in the world.
