There's a strong case to be made that Avengers: Infinity War is the darkest Marvel movie yet. The film has an incredibly grim ending, with roughly half of the people in the universe dead and gone. That said, it looks like the film was almost far darker, with the Soul World scene showing The Mad Titan walk across a river of blood after killing half of the universe.
We're learning far more about Avengers: Infinity War now that the home release is upon us. In a recent interview with Slashfilm, VFX Supervisor Dan DeLeeuw revealed that Thanos was originally going to walk across a river of blood after snapping his fingers. The blood would've represented the blood of the victims who were taken by the Infinity Stones (notably the Power Stone) and Thanos would've walked across it as he approached young Gamora in Soul World. However, as DeLeeuw explained, the blood made the sequences "a bit dark," so the decision was made to move away from that look.

Pretty creepy, right? Avengers: Infinity War is an incredibly dark movie (particularly by the standard of the superhero genre), but at the end of the day it's worth remembering that it's still a PG-13 movie. Fans can go back and forth over whether or not the blood would've enhanced the impact of the scene, but there's definitely a strong case to be made that it was indeed "a bit dark" for the film.
Besides, it's not like Avengers: Infinity War doesn't do an excellent job of reinforcing the impact of the snap. The dusting of half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (hero, villain, and innocent bystander alike), stands out as one of the most shocking moments in any Marvel Cinematic Universe film so that blood would've just been icing on the cake.
